Growth of semiconductors by molecular beam epitaxy and metal organic vapour phase epitaxy. Growth/properties of new types of semiconductor material (nitrides) suitable for producing visible light and high power, high frequency transistors. Lighting applications include: replacing bulbs in traffic lights with amber and green light emitting diodes; bulbs in domestic lighting with white light emitting diodes; and blue lasers used in the next generation high density optical disk recording systems; new transistors for base stations for mobile phones and in radar applications. Growth of magnetic semiconductors for spintronics, which may be used in future information storage devices.
