The University of Nottingham’s new £4.5million School of Health Sciences at Derby Hospital is being officially opened by the Chief Executive Nursing Officer for England.

Jane Cummings will be the guest of honour at the new school on Friday 17 May, to officially open the state-of-the-art training facility which is attached to the Royal Derby Hospital. The hospital enables nurses and allied professionals to receive tuition and practice based experience during their degree courses.

Staff and existing students have been enjoying the superior facilities on offer at the school, after moving in to the building last year.

The launch is taking place as part of a day-long nursing conference titled ‘Commitment to Compassionate Care, which is being held at the hospital and will see Jane Cummings give the keynote conference address.

Patrick Callaghan, Professor of Mental Health Nursing and Head of the School of Health Sciences at The University of Nottingham, said: “The school extends a warm welcome to Jane Cummings. We are especially pleased that Jane will officially open our new building at Derby. This is an important milestone in the school continuing to attract people into health science professions with the values, attitudes and skills in communication, caring, compassion, commitment, competence and courage.”

Derby Hospitals Director of Patient Experience and Chief Nurse Cathy Winfield said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Jane Cummings back to the Royal Derby Hospital to address our conference. Nurses, midwives and care givers from across the county will be very interested to hear what she has to say. We as an NHS Foundation Trust place compassionate care at the centre of everything that we do and our aim as care givers is to ensure that every patient is treated with care and compassion”

The new school is home to 350 students on the University’s BSc (Hons)/Diploma in Nursing, BSc (Hons) Nursing and students studying adult, child or mental health nursing on its Graduate Entry Nursing (GEN) MSc Nursing course. In addition, the centre also caters for almost 250 healthcare professionals studying professional development courses from Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
