ACS lecturer and C3R research associate wins BAAS book award

Dr. Stephanie Lewthwaite has won the 2016 British Association for American Studies Book Prize for her book A Contested Art: Modernism and Mestizaje in New Mexico (2015)

The judges commented: "This is a highly original and well-researched interdisciplinary study of a group of Hispanic painters, sculptors, and photographers in New Mexico as they faced the challenges posed by the social, economic, and cultural transformations of the interwar years. Paying close attention to the complex interplay of local, regional, national, and international artistic traditions, myths, and innovations, the book offers a smart, sophisticated and engagingly written analysis of how these artists forged a distinctive brand of modernism that both reflected and sought to manage the challenges of modernity in the South West. Blending close textual analysis with good social, historical and biographical context, Stephanie Lewthwaite’s A Contested Art illuminates far more than its local focus might suggest. It is, in sum, a very fine example of American cultural studies." Dr. Lewthwaite will receive her trophy and prize money at the BAAS and IAAS Joint Conference awards dinner in Belfast in April.
