C3R secures £6,000 Cascade grant for public engagement project

A new two-year public engagement project entitled New Nottingham will highlight the histories of community activism and social justice in New York City and Nottingham

From February 2016 to October 2017, the Centre for Research in Race and Rights (C3R) will run a transatlantic project, connecting Nottingham and New York City. The project is funded by the New York City Council and the Cascade Grant from the University of Nottingham's Impact Campaign. The aim of this project is threefold. First, this it will forge a collaborative and lasting relationship between C3R and a community centre in New York City’s Lower East Side—famous for its long history of activism and protest. Second, students at C3R will organize major elements of the entire project. The last objective of this project is to demonstrate, through this transatlantic collaboration, the importance and lessons of activism on local, national, and international levels.

From February to November 2016, the project focuses on the Loisaida venue with an exhibition on Loisaida community activism from the 1960s to 2001. It will run from October to November at Loisaida Center and feature many events such as theatre performances, scholarly and activist panels, tours, and mural paintings. After its conclusion, the same organizers will start work on an exhibition in Nottingham called Journey to Justice, which is travelling through the UK to bring the stories and lessons of past and present human rights and social justice movements to communities in UK cities. This exhibit will take place in October 2017. To draw out the links between the exhibitions, elements of the New York exhibition will be brought to Nottingham, including theatre performances and a community mural.
