Dr. Mulgrew continues research on imprisonment of foreign nationals in the Netherlands

Dr. Roisin Mulgrew has just returned from a research trip to the Netherlands. This fieldtrip was a continuation of a project on the imprisonment of foreign nationals in Europe.

This study explores issues related to the implementation of the Council of Europe’s 2012 Recommendation concerning foreign prisoners in facilities that house foreign prisoners only in both Norway and the Netherlands.

During her time in the Netherlands, Dr. Mulgrew interviewed officials from the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI) in The Hague and members of the management, custodial staff and medical team, as well as prisoners based at Ter Apel Prison in the north of the country.

This comparative analysis has been organised on behalf of the joint EuroPris and CEP Expert Group on Foreign Prisoners (of which Dr. Mulgrew is a member).

The results of this project will be reported to the Council of Europe’s Council for Penological Cooperation’s Plenary Meeting in Strasbourg on 17th November.
