InSMART: Integrative Smart City Planning

The InSmart project brings together cities and scientific organizations in order to establish a methodology for enhancing sustainable planning for both the current and future city needs through an integrative and multidisciplinary planning approach. Such an approach will identify the optimum mix of short, medium and long term projects and investments, addressing the efficiency of energy flows across various city sectors with regards to economic, environmental and social criteria and will pave the way towards actual implementation of priority actions. The 4 cities modelled during the project are Nottingham (UK), Evora (Portugal), Cesena (Italy) and Trikala (Greece)

In addition to developing actual detailed sustainable energy action plans for the cities involved, the project also aims to provide a comprehensive methodology for integrated sustainable strategies for cities that can be replicated, updated and extended based on the specific city status of development.

Energy use associated with each city's buildings, transport systems, street lighting and other sectors are modelled in detail. These models are used as input for a city planning platform based on TIMES-MARKAL models produced for each city. The results of this analysis will then be used to create evidence-based Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP) for each city that aim to represent a significant step forward in municipal energy planning
