Prague-Nottingham Symposium on Non-UN Sanctions and International Law

Professor Mary Footer and Professor Nigel White, co-directors of the Nottingham International Law and Security Centre (NILSC), chaired sessions of an international symposium considering the legality and legitimacy of sanctions imposed outside of the UN system on 5 May 2017.

The event was hosted by the Institute of International Relations in Prague, organised by Professor Veronika Bilkova, and was sponsored by the European Society of International Law, represented by Professor Footer and Professor Anne Von Aaken (University of St. Gallen). It was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in the Czernin Palace Prague and involved 12 speakers addressing amongst other matters the legality of EU sanctions against Russia in response to its intervention in Crimea.

There will be a second event on 10 November 2017 hosted by Professors White and Footer at the Nottingham International Law and Security Centre, examining issues of effectiveness and accountability of Non-UN sanctions. A call for papers will be issued shortly.
