Brian Moore being inducted into our Hall of Fame
We are delighted to announce that University of Nottingham alumnus and former England Rugby international Brian Moore has been inducted into our Hall of Fame. Brian graduated from the university in 1984 with a law degree, and went on to represent his nation 64 times including leading his country to the World Cup Final in 1991. That year, he was also voted Whitbread Rugby World Player of the Year as he won the first of his three grand slam titles with England. His performances in the front row for his clubs and country also led to Brian's inclusion on two British & Irish Lions tours, where he won five test caps. Following his decorated playing career, Brian moved seamlessly into media work which he continues to this day as a respected commentator, analyst and columnist for numerous organisations. His autobiography Beware of the Dog, released in 2009, also won the coveted William Hill Sports Book of the Year award ahead of a strong shortlist, as well as the Best Autobiography Award at the British Sports Book Awards. In 2014, Moore was voted the University of Nottingham’s Greatest Sportsman by fellow alumni as part of the University’s Greatest Sporting Heroes campaign.
Brian's induction into our Hall of Fame is well deserved and was celebrated recently in conjunction with the celebration of the university rugby clubs centenary year. The centenary should have been celebrated in 2020, however due to the pandemic was unable to take place. Alongside Brian, the university’s proud rugby heritage has contributed to the development of world-class rugby players; England caps Ron Jacobs and Nick Preston, and more recently Tim Streather and Chris Wyles. We are delighted that the club were finally able to honour the history of the university's rugby programme, with games played on Saturday 11 September followed by a celebratory dinner which included Brian Moore's Hall of Fame induction with Brian in attendance.
On his induction Brian stated that "it's an incredible honour to be inducted into any hall of fame, and with it being my Alma Mater it's even more special," adding that "when you look now at the David Ross Sports Village, it is equal to any other facility you could name in the country - without doubt." Brian also added the following on his time at the University of Nottingham - "The main part of University life which they don't teach you in the classroom is what makes you as a person. The friends i've made from Nottingham, not just in rugby circles, but in social circles have been the ones that are best friends for life." The night, held at Nottingham Conference Centre, included a silent and standard auction with all money raised on the night going towards the continued growth of the rugby club. The money raised in total was over £15,000 which will go towards brilliant initiatives to support the clubs progress. It was fantastic to see so many of the clubs former players reunite at the dinner, reminiscing and discussing stories from their time playing in the #GreenandGold.
