Studying Effectively

Working in groups

Much of your study at Nottingham will be organised on an individual basis and you will ultimately gain a qualification that reflects your individual achievements in the modules you take. However, the ability to work collaboratively and in teams or groups is a highly prized attribute valued by employers. Therefore, formal and organised team working is part of most undergraduate and taught Masters programmes at the University of Nottingham.

There are also many informal opportunities to work collaboratively during your studies on tasks that aren't specifically based around group work. In both formal and informal situations there are enormous benefits that can be gained from learning how to work efficiently with your peers.

Effective team-working

Effective team-working requires the development of a wide range of personal skills such as:

  • Being able to see things from other people’s perspectives
  • Developing rapport with peers
  • Communication skills
  • Being assertive (but not aggressive)
  • Negotiation and persuasion skills
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Organising activities
