Academic Book Week to focus on academic books and the environment

Academic Book Week logo

Academic Book Week is a national campaign which aims to celebrate the diversity of academic books and the learnings we can take from them.  The theme of this year’s campaign has never been more important or timely ‘Academic Books and the Environment.’  This year Blackwell’s, your University Bookshop has teamed up with the Sustainability department to strengthen this campaign and highlight sustainability through their love of books.

The purpose of an academic book is to open debate as well as teach, inspire and lead us to think.  Over the past year there has been an abundance of books written and published which highlight and challenge us on the behaviours of sustainable living, from Greta Thunberg’s ‘No One is Too Small to Make a Difference’ to ‘This is Not a Drill’ an Extinction Rebellion Handbook and Mark Berners-Lee’s highly praised ‘There is No Planet B’. This year Blackwell's will be celebrating the books which challenge these ideas.

During sustainability week Blackwell’s will also be showcasing their new ranges of eco-friendly and recycled stationery, so do be sure to stop by and pick up a new ruler made from an old computer, a new pen made from an old bottle or a vegan leather covered journal.

Blackwell’s is committed to helping the University achieve its sustainability goals and believe we have a responsibility to the campus community to review our own actions and take the step change to become more sustainable, this is why they have taken the green bookselling pledge too and signed up to the green bookselling manifesto.  This means they will be reviewing energy sources, supply chains and taking steps to cut waste – this will ensure your University Bookshop becomes a green bookshop.
