Andrei Călăraşu was born in 1922 in Botosani, Romania as Bernard Grupper, son of Zalman and Eti. He grew up in Jassy, where his mother passed away.
On 29 June 1941, with the German invasion of Russia, Bernard, his father and his brother, Paul, were taken to the local police courtyard. At midnight, they were marched to the train station where German and Romanian soldiers pulled gold teeth from their mouths, and cut off fingers bearing gold rings.

3.1.1 Treatment or management? In the preceding paragraph you will notice that we talked generally about the treatment of conditions, but referred to ‘managing’ dyslexia. Why did we do this? It relates to the following important general issues:
Is treatment (i.e. intervention) warranted? We mentioned this issue when we were discussing sociocultural or personal distress based definitions of abnormality. Intervention is not always 2.3.4 Lateralisation It has long been suspected that unusual patterns of cerebral lateralisation (i.e. the ‘division of labour’ between left and right hemispheres of the brain) may have some connection with dyslexia. It will also impact on people's expectations of their future development. For example, we discussed the way that dyslexia is defined in relation to a person's IQ. Does that mean that if someone has a low IQ and an even lower reading age we should adjust our expectations of what that person can achieve with help, or let IQ influence how much help is offered 1.7.2 Differentiating within dyslexia – acquired versus developmental dyslexia and the search There has also been continued debate regarding the variability within any dyslexic population, the apparent variety of forms that dyslexia can take. Given the complexity of the skills required to develop fluent reading and spelling perhaps this is not surprising. The variability within dyslexia may simply reflect the fact that this complex process can go wrong in different ways and for different reasons.
