The following calculation shows the development and evolution of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities which develop behind the supernova blast wave on a time scale of a few hours. The initial model was chosen to provide a good representation for the progenitor star for Supernova 1987A. The calculation was performed using the Piecewise-Parabolic Method for hydrodynamics on a two-dimensional spherical grid with rotational symmetry about the vertical axis and equatorial symmetry about the horizontal axis.
Plan to attend the 2011 Academic Convocation, scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, September 16, 2011, in the Rudder Theatre Complex. The Convocation will feature President Loftin's state-of-the-university address, including a mid-term look at our progress toward the goals of Vision 2020.

The intertidal zone is found where the tides rise and fall daily, alternatively submerging and exposing the shore to ocean water. Organisms are exposed to periods of varying moisture, sunlight, and wave forces.
The International Space Station video update for Sept. 7, 2011.
This video demonstrates adding two digit numbers without regrouping, showing the addition with tens and ones sticks and cubes (base 10 blocks). This is a great modeling lesson for the classroom and for home. (2:07)
The Erythemal Index is a measure of ultraviolet radiation (UV) at ground level on the Earth. UV exists to the left of the visible spectrum and is divided into three components (UV-A, UV-B and UV-C). UV-B (290-320 wavelengths) is the most dangerous form of UV radiation that can reach ground level. Atmospheric ozone shields life at the surface from most of the harmful components of solar radiation. Chemical processes in the atmosphere can effect the level of protection provided by the ozone in the

A letter written exactly 96 years ago by a young British solider serving in Gallipoli is among an archive of correspondence from men caught up in the First World War that will be on show to the public for the first time during Open Cambridge, when the Bodley Library of Christ's College opens its doors on 9 and 10 September.
The letters displayed have been chosen from a total of around 30 sent by old boys of the Perse School in Cambridge to their headmaster WHD Rouse, who was a Fellow of Christ'
The Civil War was the first American war thoroughly caught on film. Mathew Brady and his crew of photographers captured many images of this divisive war, ranging from portraits to battle scenes. This site offers 1000 annotated Civil War photographs ranging from portraits to battle scenes. Students become reporters, assigned to sort through photos to find one that will bring the war to life for their readers. They write a newspaper article based on their chosen photograph and publish it on the we
