Ever Wonder Why Ice Floats on Water?
When water freezes, it expands and becomes less dense. This means that there is the same number of particles taking up more space.  Since the ice cubes are less dense than the water, they float! As an ice cube melts, its volume changes, but its weight is conserved (law of conservation of mass).
