SeaWiFS: The Effect of the Congo on the Atlantic
By monitoring the color of reflected light via satellite, scientists can determine how successfully plant life is photosynthesizing. A measurement of photosynthesis is essentially a measurement of successful growth, and growth means successful use of ambient carbon. Until now, scientists have only had a continuous record of photosynthesis on land. But following three years of continual data collected by the SeaWiFS instrument, NASA has gathered the first record of photosynthetic productivity in
Molecular Dynamics Model
The EJS Molecular Dynamics model is constructed using the Lennard-Jones potential truncated at a distance of 3 molecular diameters. The motion of the molecules is governed by Newton's laws, approximated using the Verlet algorithm with the indicated time step. For sufficiently small time steps dt, the system's total energy should be approximately conserved.
"The Society of Mind, Spring 2007"
" This course is an introduction to a theory that tries to explain how minds are made from collections of simpler processes. The subject treats such aspects of thinking as vision, language, learning, reasoning, memory, consciousness, ideals, emotions, and personality. Ideas incorporate psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to resolve theoretical issues such as whole vs. parts, structural vs. functional descriptions, declarative vs. procedural representations, symbolic vs. con
Diversity of Fishes: Bloch Illustrations
This online image collection features a brief biography of ichthyologist Marcus Elieser Bloch and 34 of his hand-colored fish illustrations. The collection is from Diversity of Fishes, a distance-learning course that is part of the Museum's Seminars on Science, designed to help educators meet the new national science standards.

Google Sky in the Upper Elementary Classroom
Elementary School students are becoming more technologically savvy. Google Sky/Sky in Google Earth are two programs that can be used to teach elementary students. These programs can be used when discussing History, Math, and Science. This module will explore ways to do that in the upper elementary grades (grades 3-6).
How much do you know about our trees? - Quiz

Cell Celebration!
In this lesson, the students look at the components of cells and their functions. The lesson focuses on the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Each part of the cell performs a specific function that is vital for the cell's survival. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that are very important to engineers. Engineers can use bacteria to break down toxic materials in a process called bioremediation, and they can also kill or disable harmful bacteria through disinfection.
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
This patient education program reviews urinary tract anatomy and symptoms to explain what an intravenous pyelogram (IVP) involves, including the benefits and risks of this procedure. This is a MedlinePlus Interactive Health Tutorial from the National Library of Medicine, designed and developed by the Patient Education Institute.

How Many Drops?
In this lesson and its associated activity, students conduct a simple test to determine how many drops of each of three liquids can be placed on a penny before spilling over. The three liquids are water, rubbing alcohol, and vegetable oil; because of their different surface tensions, more water can be piled on top of a penny than either of the other two liquids. However, this is not the main point of the activity. Instead, students are asked to come up with an explanation for their observations
May the Magnetic Force be with You
This lesson begins with a demonstration of the deflection of an electron beam. Students then review their knowledge of the cross product and the right hand rule with sample problems. After which, students study the magnetic force on a charged particle as compared to the electric force. The following lecture material covers the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field with respect to the direction of the field. Finally, students apply these concepts to understand the magnetic force on a c
"Biomaterials-Tissue Interactions, Fall 2009"
"This course covers the principles of materials science and cell biology underlying the design of medical implants, artificial organs, and matrices for tissue engineering. Methods for biomaterials surface characterization and analysis of protein adsorption on biomaterials. Molecular and cellular interactions with biomaterials are analyzed in terms of unit cell processes, such as matrix synthesis, degradation, and contraction. Mechanisms underlying wound healing and tissue remodeling following im

Weather and Climate - by StudyJams
Weather is the condition of the outside air at any time or place, and it is constantly changing. The climate, on the other hand, gives the big picture, or what the weather is like over a long period of time. Learn more about the differences between weather and climate with this cartoon animation from StudyJams. A short, self-checking quiz is also included with this link.
