An Assessment of Hillslope Stability Using the Factor of Safety
In this homework assignment, students consider the balance of forces on a hillslope using the Factor of Safety by calculating shear stress and shear strength for an example hillslope and formulating an expression for the factor of safety in an Excel spreadsheet. Molecular Dynamics Demonstration Model
The EJS Molecular Dynamics Demonstration model is constructed using the Lennard-Jones potential truncated at a distance of 3 molecular diameters. The motion of the molecules is governed by Newton's laws, approximated using the Verlet algorithm with the indicated Time step. For sufficiently small time steps dt, the system's total energy should be approximately conserved. Users can select various initial configurations using the drop down menu.
Body With Thruster Model
The Body with Thruster Model shows the motion of a disk with an attached rocket engine. You can drag the engine to change its distance from the center of the disk and you can adjust the thrust of the rocket engine using sliders. The mass of the rocket and its connecting rod are assumed to be negligible. The trajectory of this single-body model is intuitively challenging and difficult to visualize.
Helmholtz Coils
The EJS Helmholtz Coils Model shows a the magnetic field between two circular coils of wire. The default configuration, known as a Helmholtz coil, sets the separation distance D equal to the coil radius R. These values produce a nearly uniform magnetic field B between the coils.
