Civil Court Action: Purchase of a Horse Scenario
The simulation concerns the alleged non-payment of part of the purchase price of a horse. It is an adversarial transaction where students act either as agents for a client raising the action or a client defending the action from the initial stage up to the Options Hearing stage of the procedure. The students acting for the pursuer are provided with a statement from their client and instructions from a supervisor asking them to raise the action in court. They are given deadlines to meet and provi

SelMa - Self-guided Learning in Teaching Mathematics
In the project ``Self-guided Learning in Teaching Mathematics - SEC II'' (SelMa), five authoring schools are working out scenarios, media and materials for phases of self-guided learning, which will be tested systematically by 10 trial schools with regard to their everyday suitability. In this paper three approaches to such learning arrangements (independent learning centre, jigsaw classroom and learning at stations) are being outlined and relevant experiences are being made available. Internet Scout Project
Engaging in social issues in today's society requires an understanding of numerical data, statistics, and mathematical assumptions that underlie discussions about the federal budget, the spread of disease and other issues. However, the mathematics and the social issues are often considered in isolation and leave many Americans "ill-prepared to make informed decisions." The Thinking with Data Project is a new initiative of the National Science Foundation, SRI International, Kent State University
HIV Problem Space
In this problem space, you will have access to the following materials: background information on HIV/AIDS, the original Markham et al. reference and other primary literature, viral sequences from each visit of each patient, patients' CD4 counts at each visit, phylogenetic trees of the virus sequences from each patient, a phylogenetic tree of each patient's starting consensus viral sequence, a published activity using this data from the book Microbes Count!, and additional materials prepared by
Narratives and their significance for childrens communication about their world
In this article I will give a description and a definition of narrative through historical review. This forms a background to my other purpose, to describe and discuss the importance of using storytelling as a tool for meaning making for the individual. In this text I will also raise the significance of stories as a tool for society to mediate culturally important messages to the individual and thereby shed light upon the dialectics between the individual and the collective.,part of Kaleidoscope

Mastering by the teacher of the instrumental genesis in CAS environments: necessity of instrumental
In this article, we study didactic phenomena identified in integration experiments within our classes, CAS(implemented in calculators). From this study, we show the interest of an instrumental approach to understand the influence of tools on the mathematical approach and on the building of students' knowledge: through a process - instrumental genesis - a calculator becomes a mathematical work tool; this process depends on the tool's constraints and potentialities, on students' knowledge, and on

Caught in the Net
Bycatch can be defined as the act of unintentionally catching certain living creatures using fishing gear. A bycatched species is distinguished from a target species (the animal the gear is intended to catch) because it is not sold or used. Marine mammals (whales, dolphins, porpoises), seabirds, sea turtles and unwanted or undersized fish are some examples of animals caught as by-catch The incidental capture of these animals can significantly reduce their populations. The most well known example
STAR methodology-based learning about construction accidents and their prevention
This paper presents the results of a feasibility study concerning the application of STAR-methodology-basedmachine learning to construction accidents and their prevention. A ten-stage knowledge acquisition process is presented and its individual stages described. Knowledge about construction accidents was acquired using a collection of 225 examples, based on actual accidents records. Inductive learning with a system based on the STAR-methodology was employed. This system was used in both the gen
