Changes in microstructure of a shape memory alloy (bi-crystal of austenitic CuAlNi )
Changes in microstructure of a shape memory alloy being heat treated and also mechanically deformed. A bi-crystal of austenitic CuAlNi is cooled, causing transformation to the martensitic (2H orthorhombic) phase. The process is reversed in the second half of the video, as the specimen is heated again. The rate at which transformation occurs is controlled by heat flow effects. (The shear process itself tends to take place very rapidly.) The martensitic phase is internally twinned. This is very cl

Introduction to modelling for 1st year engineers
These resources cover an introduction to modelling for first year engineering undergraduate. The main focus is on electrical and mechanical systems, but there is also some discussion of dc motors, fluids and heat as well as an introduction to time series modelling. The main emphasis is on why modelling is important and how to go about doing this from first principles (e.g. Kirchhoff's laws, Newton's Laws, etc.). Given the focus is on new students arriving at University, there is no attempt to de
Papers of George Washington
In this section of our site, we have endeavored to provide teachers and students with useful primary and secondary materials to help foster understanding of early America through the life of George Washington. These resources can work on several levels. First, the twelve slides themselves provide a general chronology of the life of George Washington as well as secondary information on the larger historical context. Ideally, this background material reiterates your own class text readings and dis
Jeff Rubin and Andrew Nikiforuk on the future of oil

Beginner - You look confused We all get confused sometimes, but it's a shame to miss the chance to clear the confusion by not asking for an explanation. Today we teach you some important vocabulary that is often used between a student and a teacher.

Beginner - Need a plastic bag The environmental concerns of using plastic carrier bags has become quite a big issue in the UK (and many parts of the world for that matter) with many supermarkets now rewarding customers for reusing plastic bags and some even charging for them in the fight to cut down on their usage. This hasn't really hit on as much in the Arab world; in this lesson we'll be teaching you how to ask for a bag and discussing the topic furthe

United States v. Thomas Cooper: A Violation of the Sedition Law
This lesson presents facsimiles of 8 printed and hand-written documents surrounding the case of Thomas Cooper, a lawyer and newspaper editor in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, who was indicted, prosecuted, and convicted of violating the Sedition Act after he published a broadside in 1799 that sharply criticized President John Adams. The case is famous in the annals of the Bill of Rights and the First Amendment. This lesson correlates to the National History Standards and the National Standards for Civics

This publication about energy transfers and energy transformations features hand-selected online resources for middle school science teachers. An introduction notes the ubiquitous nature of energy movements and conversions.
Spread of Technology from Ford to Europe in 1920s
Ford was the preeminent manufacturer in the 1920s. However,
the Ford techniques were spread internationally by Ford itself through
subsidiaries and by other companies learning from Ford. This video
shows both processes. Note that the British firm Morris, while
instituting an assembly line, has a hand-driven version and thus paid
its workers on piece rates. Ford had a mechanical line and thus could
regulate the work pace without piece rate incentives.

Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor
Rachmaninov composed it following a period of deep depression during which he questioned whether he could ever compose again. Response to his First Symphony - after it was initially performed in St. Petersburg - was extremely negative, sending Sergei Vasilievich into a tailspin.
A brilliant pianist with a famously wide hand span, he began to think performing in concert (or conducting) might be a better career path for him. Deeply unsettled, he began drinking too much alcohol.Â
