The CoVis Project: Building a Large-Scale Science Education Testbed
This paper describes the construction and research program of the Learning Through Collaborative Visualization (CoVis) Project. a testbed for exploring science education reform with telecommunications technology. The CoVis testbed is contrasted with other forms of cducational research in an "ecolo~yo f paradigms." which argues that testbeds are in fact a new setting for research with different requirements and challenges for the researcher. Two extended examples of telecommunications research ar
Student conference on global warming: a collaborative network-supported ecologically hierarchic geos
A five week global warming curriculum for precollege students has been designed as part of the Learning through Collaborative Visualization Project (Pea, 1993). A collaborative version of the curriculum will be enacted in January, 1996, within twenty classrooms located primarily in Illinois, Michigan, and New Jersey. The primary goals for this curriculum are:
A. Forge links between students and the scientific community around a topic of common interest.
B. Engage students in scientific investi
Global University System with Globally Collaborative Environmental Peace Gaming Project
The Global University System (GUS) [1] [Utsumi, et al, 2003] is a worldwide initiative to create advanced telecommunications infrastructure for access to educational resources across national and cultural boundaries for global peace. GUS aims to create a worldwide consortium of universities to provide the underdeveloped world with access to 21st Century education via broadband Internet technologies. The aim is to achieve “education and healthcare for all,” anywhere, anytime and at any pace.
Integrating research teams: the TELMA approach
In the context of the Kaleidoscope Network of Excellence, six European research teams developed a methodology for integrating their research approaches. In this paper we present the methodology, based on a cross experiment, showing how it gave insight to the understanding of each team's research, and on the relationship between theoretical frameworks and experimental research.
Using online role play to teach internet safety awareness
This paper reports on an evaluation of Net-Detectives, a creative online role play activity aimed at 9–12 year olds. Net-Detectives forms part of Kidsmart, an Internet awareness programme aimed at school children. It was evaluated through a multiple method data collection using questionnaire surveys, follow up telephone interviews with teachers and observation in use in three UK schools during the summer term of 2003.
All sources of data collected agreed that a number of benefits arise from p
Adaptive learning scenarios for detection of misconceptions about electricity and remediation
Our main objective is to model the knowledge used by learners in order to solve problems about electricity. We are searching means to do a diagnosis about student's activity based on a microworld of electric circuits. Once the diagnosis realized, we try to provide the learner with the most relevant remediation with regard to his/her misconceptions.

Believing Cassandra: how to be an optimist in a pessimist's world
Coinciding with the reprint of Alan’s classic book, this event will look at how to build a bridge over the sea of despair, and show how to catch the wave to an enticing, sustainable future. Alan will discuss the pioneers who created the ideas, techniques and practices of sustainable living - the people who prove Cassandra's warnings wrong, by believing in them, and taking strategic action. Alan AtKisson is president and CEO of The AtKisson Group, an international sustainability consultancy to

Producci?n Digital de un Auditorio (Digital Production of an Auditorium)
In the middle of the year 2001, we had the opportunity to project an Auditory in the particular building of our School of Architecture. The chance to produce the entire project an all the technical documentation was given; using only digital tools. The use of this tools let us to calculate illumination, isolation study, sound an thermical conditioning with a real time visualization of the three dimensional model.
Hacia una RV de Representaci?n Hiperrealista (Towards a VR of Hyper-realistic Representation)
The objetive of the proyect is the hiperrealistic simulation of scenarios on standard PCs. We use the same tools that are used by the entertainment industry (3d graphics engines) to get the highest level of realism possible in 3d worlds. By now, we are exploring only the audio and visual areas. The potencial of this 3d enviorments construction tools let us to create exploration enviorments for academic and professional implementation like commerce, tourism, education, communication, etc.

Laboratory Techniques - Subculture: Broth to Broth
Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, which are usually maintained in culture. Pure cultures of microbes are crucial to the success of studies in this area. Good, repeatable results must rely on good aseptic technique being used at all times, and on the correct use of related techniques.
