Texas Tech Researcher Documents New Arachnid
Texas Tech researcher James Cokendolpher, a research scientist and assistant curator of invertebrates at The Museum of Texas Tech University, is investigating a newly discovered arachnid.
Parobisium yosemite was discovered a couple of years ago in a cave in Yosemite National Park. This cave-dewlling species is considered unique because it is able to live in granite rockfalls instead of limestone caves where most other species live.
All Caught Up
Commercial fishing nets often trap unprofitable animals in the process of catching their target species. In the following activity, students will experience the difficulty that fishermen experience while trying to isolate a target species when a variety of animals are found in the area of interest. The class will then discuss the large magnitude of this problem. Students will practice their data acquisition and analysis skills, through the collection of data and processing of this information to

Earth Exploration Toolbook Chapter: Measuring Distance and Area in Satellite Images
Users download and analyze MODIS imagery from 2001 and 2003 to quantify the shrinking of the Aral Sea. The chapter steps users through downloading, installing, and measuring with ImageJ, a freely available image analysis program. Users employ the software to set the spatial calibration of an image, then select and measure distances directly from the image. Measurement results are reported in real-world units. Users also select, measure, and compare the area covered by the sea in three time-serie
TALAT Lecture 3208: The Finishing of Castings
This lecture provides an introduction to some of the finer points in the production of high quality castings. The students will be able to understand the various processes for sealing porosity in badly made castings and to appreciate factors influencing the accuracy of castings, including a basic understanding of how to control and measure casting dimensions. Basic understanding of the foundry industry is assumed.

TALAT Lecture 1101: Resources and Production of Aluminium
This lecture illustrates the natural abundance of the element and the history of its extraction from the ore; it shows the properties of pure aluminium, outlines the importance of alloys to commercial development and shows the range of alloys available and their classification; it describes the principal markets for aluminium; it illustrates the basic processes used in the production of primary aluminium and the main fabricating routes used to provide the products needed by manufacturing industr
Exploring Complex Forms in Nature Through Mathematical Modeling: a Case on Turritella Terebra
Changing paradigm of nature-architecture relationship has being directly affected from developing science and technologies as well as from the impact of biomimetic inventions in various man made designs. Our perception of forms and structures are also shifting through use of computational techniques. From this aspect, mathematical models can be considered as the first step to analyze the complex forms and structures in nature. In this paper it is aimed to initiate a platform in architecture whic
Hacia una RV de Representaci?n Hiperrealista (Towards a VR of Hyper-realistic Representation)
The objetive of the proyect is the hiperrealistic simulation of scenarios on standard PCs. We use the same tools that are used by the entertainment industry (3d graphics engines) to get the highest level of realism possible in 3d worlds. By now, we are exploring only the audio and visual areas. The potencial of this 3d enviorments construction tools let us to create exploration enviorments for academic and professional implementation like commerce, tourism, education, communication, etc.
Landscape Design Tool of Wide Ecological Aspect
The article shows new tool prepared in two Technical Universities in Poland. The packet as a whole, of its current condition, is mainly elaborated by Henryk Andrzejewski at Faculty of Architecture of Wroclaw Technical University. Plant and vegetation units specifier is so far prepared by Krzysztof M. Rostahski and Mirostaw Rogula at Faculty of Architecture of Silesian Technical University. The packet allows to create the new text database of plants and to add the external data to the existing da
Cybrids: Integrating Cognitive and Physical Space in Architecture
People regularly use non-physical, cognitive spaces to navigate and think. These spaces are important to
architects in the design and planning of physical buildings. Cognitive spaces inform design - often underlying
principles of architectural composition. They include zones of privacy, territory and the space of memory and
visual thought. They let us to map our environment, model or plan projects, even imagine places like Heaven
or Hell.
Cyberspace is an electronic extension of this cognitive
A Procedural Model for Integrating Physical and Cyberspaces in Architecture
This dissertation articulates opportunities offered by architectural computation, in particular the digital simulation of space known as virtual reality (VR) and its networked, social variant cyberspace. Research suggests that environments that hybridize technologies call for a conception of space as information, i.e. space is both a product of and tool for cognition. The thesis proposes a model whereby architecture can employ this concept of space in creating hybrids that integrate physical a
Envisioning Cyberspace: Designing 3D Electronic Spaces
Free of the constraints of physical form and limited only by imagination, new environments spring to life daily in a fantastic realm called cyberspace. The creators of this new virtual world may be programmers, designers, architects, even children. In this invigorating exploration of the juncture between cyberspace and the physical world, architect Peter Anders brings together leading-edge cyberspace art and architecture ... inspiring new techniques and technologies ... unexpected unions of real

Design Tool Integration: Model Flexibility for the Building Profession
The development of ICAtect, as discussed in the Building Systems Automation and Integration Symposium of 1991, provides a way of integrating simulation tools through a common building model. However, ICAtect is only a small step towards the ultimate goal of total integration and automation of the building design process. In this paper we investigate the next steps on the path toward integration. We examine how models structured to capture the physical attributes of the building, as required by s

This article deals with the issue of pattern fitting and it is divided into two parts. The first part presents a developed software for rectangle fitting (regular items). The second part is intended to evaluate the usability of a garment industry commercial software that performs the pattern fitting for irregular items. From the assessment carried out and based on the initial software presented here, the interface and the features of new software applied to pattern fitting for irregular items wi
Una rama en la arquitectura de la era digital (A branch in architecture of the digital age)
Genetic information determines the germ of life, the first idea, that encloses all the power of creation. In every "germ" lays the identity, the strength to seek and fulfill expression in form. History, technical and scientific progress require new answers and provide new tools while encouraging investigation. A "Branch", a simple nature element, is reinterpreted into bits of information, reconstructed after being apprehended. This process reveals new elements that could have never been conceive
