9.7 Control-model diagrams

Perhaps, like me, you are beginning to form the view there were some ambiguities about purpose in the case-study situation. Control models are a useful way of investigating purpose and the means in place to achieve it. They address issues like ‘What is X trying to achieve?’ ‘How are they trying to do it?’ and ‘How will they know when they've done it?’ Control-model diagrams provide a structure for exploring these questions. The drawing of the model allows you to decide whet

3.1 The helical structure of DNA

Having outlined the general principles of nucleic acid structures, we will now focus on how these principles influence the formation of specific structures found in DNA.

The helical structure of DNA arises because of the specific interactions between bases and the non-specific hydrophobic effects described earlier. Its structure is also determined through its active synthesis; that is, duplex DNA is synthesised by specialist polymerases upon a template strand. Within the helix, the two

2.10 Selenium (Se)

Selenium is found in the body in an important group of enzymes (glutathione peroxidases) which have important antioxidant properties and work in conjunction with vitamins C and E to destroy free radicals in cells. Some studies have shown that a higher selenium level is linked to a lower risk of breast, prostate and colon cancer, which may in part be due to selenium's antioxidant function. Other selenium-containing proteins help to regulate thyroid function and play a role in the immune system

3.3 Antivirus software

In conjunction with these patches, you should also install antivirus software. This is because patches and updates are not always issued quickly enough to protect your system from new viral attacks. In addition, patches only stop the types of malware that exploit errors in the program code.

Antivirus software is updated as new malware is found, so it can offer a higher level of protection than just relying on manufacturers' updates. Antivirus software is specifically designed to catch a

2.7 Music matters

There was little difference in sound quality between the phonograph cylinder and the gramophone disc. The limited frequency response of the acoustic recording and playback process restricted the sounds that could be reproduced. Instruments tended to be limited to brass and piano, and middle-register voices (alto and tenor) were the most suitable. So why did the disc succeed over the cylinder? The answer has little to do with technology and much more to do with the tenor Enrico Caruso and the

5.1.2 In what context was the text published?

This amounts to asking, when was it written and for what audience. Academic texts are written to make a contribution to the debates going on within the field. To understand where an author is coming from and why arguments are being presented in a particular way, you need to be able to place the text in context. Layard's article was published in 2003 in the UK, and was drawn from a prestigious series of public lectures. So the context is a major statement by a prominent academic

You saw in Section 2.3 that the prongs of the tuning fork vibrate cyclically. You also learned that a cycle of the prongs' vibration is a complete sequence of motion up to the point at which the motion starts to repeat itself.
