Surveying the scene: learning metaphors, survey design and the workplace context
The skills debate has for many years been preoccupied with the supply of qualified individuals and participation in training events. This emphasis is reflected in the sources of systematic data currently available. However, recent case study work suggests that qualifications and training are partial measures of skill development as most learning arises naturally out of the demands and challenges of everyday work experience and interactions with colleagues, clients and customers. This paper ar
A comparison of preferred learning styles, approaches and methods between information science and co
In recent years the two disciplines of Information and Library Studies and Computing Science have drawn closer together to the extent that now there are several Universities where they are combined in a single school of Information and Computing Science or Informatics. Currently, a single Higher Education Academy Subject Centre serves the two disciplines. However, there are marked differences between the disciplines observable immediately in the gender balance of their respective undergraduate c

Mediating effects of active and distributed instruments on narrative activities
This paper discusses the effects of introducing new distributed and active instruments on narrative activities in a school environment. We address the issue of how the Pogo instruments change children's activity when they invent stories. The results enable us to compare the way the activity is carried out, both in its conventional context and with the Pogo instruments, mainly along three main lines of investigation: the collective dimension, the use of space and the structure of the narrative. SMECTRA - An European network for online counselling on the application of new media in enterprise t
This communication introduces the objectives and the innovative approaches proposed in the frame of the Leonardo da Vinci pilot project SMECTRA: "Small and Medium Enterprises Counselling and TRAining network for the efficient application of new media". More specifically, it focuses on the evaluation of the status of vocational training and e-Learning in Small and Medium Enterprises emphasising that the technology and the content are not sufficient to implement successful e-Learning programmes, b
Networked Management Learning for Managers of Small and Medium Enterprises
This paper argues that networked management learning might have specific relevance for SME management development since this model recognizes the importance of social relations and the associated relational dialogue that underpin knowledge and innovation in specific business contexts. Indeed NML reinforces the centrality of networking entrepreneurs and other relevant actors at the local level to increase the effectiveness of their actions and also helps integrate the different components of the
Falling Water
Students drop water from different heights to demonstrate the conversion of water’s potential energy to kinetic energy. They see how varying the height from which water is dropped affects the splash size. They follow good experiment protocol, take measurements, calculate averages and graph results. In seeing how falling water can be used to do work, they also learn how this energy transformation figures into the engineering design and construction of hydroelectric power plants, dams and reserv
Landscape Diffusion Lab
In this STELLA modeling project, students create a model of two marine terrace platforms separated in elevation by a cliff. They use this model to examine how landscapes evolve over time in response to diffusive processes such as raindrop impacts, the annual cycle of freeze-thaw, tree throw, and the action of burrowing animals. Learning goals, context for use, teaching tips, materials, assessment tips and related resources are provided.
Hot, Flat and Crowded
Thomas L Friedman takes a fresh and provocative look at two of our biggest challenges - the global environmental crisis and America's surprising loss of focus and national purpose since 9-11 - and shows how they're linked. He argues that we need American commitment and leadership in a green revolution, a revolution that will be the biggest innovation project in history, one that will inspire us to summon all the intelligence, creativity, boldness and concern for the common good that are our grea
Documentary Photography: the long term project
Jessica Dimmock outlines the issues and obstacles relating to documentary photography, and the value of the long term project.
