1 The family and literacy

It is important that we acknowledge the relationship between family and literacy in our teaching practices and in the school context. We would now like to examine two issues related to this theme. First we focus on how families and schools can work together to establish home–school links to support the learning of students who experience difficulties in literacy development in ways which take account of:

  • a diversity of family and cultural background

5.2 Why plan?

Captain James Lovell chose the title ‘A successful failure’ for an article on the Apollo 13 Lunar Mission. The failure was that the lunar landing was abandoned. The success was that, although an explosion blew a gaping hole in the spacecraft three-quarters of the way to the moon and knocked out the electrical systems as well as the service module's engine, the three astronauts returned safely to Earth. Can you think of a better example of the value of emergency planning?

In this reading it would be inappropriate to attempt to review this vast literature, which covers an enormous range of topics and aspects of groups. Instead, I focus attention here on two particular aspects of groups. First, I examine the nature of the contracts within a group: what it is that people gain from belonging to a

2.9 Conclusions

This reading has addressed four questions: what characterises a group, what characterises a team, how project teams are organised and what can make teams ineffective. Work groups or teams are generally more focused on particular tasks and outcomes, and use processes that aim to achieve a unity of purpose, communication and action. I looked at six major types of team: functional, project, matrix, contract, self-managing and self-

7.1 Some basic principles of religious studies

Remember that in Section 4 I suggested that possible reasons for studying religion could be clustered together under two broad headings:

  1. to understand the society in which we live, the culture we inherit and the wider world of which we are a part;

  2. as part of a personal quest for religious

6.3 Setting things apart

The tendency within religious behaviour to set things apart from the everyday does not just apply to time and place but also to ideas of authority (leaders and texts), to beliefs more generally, to institutions and to aspects of behaviour as, for example, in dress and diet.
