A Virtual Reconstruction: Isthmia Roman Bath
The Isthmia Roman Bath is located in Greece overlooking a great ravine on the Isthmus of Corinth. It was in use during the 2nd through the 4th centuries. I have created a 3D VRML walkthrough of the ancient bath. This interdisciplinary project utilizes the research of an archaeologist, architect, and art historian. Because the researchers live in different locations, it made sense to use the Internet as a research tool. When clicking on the numbers on the home page, you can see the process that I
Critical Environmentalism and the Practice of Re-Construction
This research focuses on the implications and applications of ?critical environmentalism? as a quintessential epistemological framework for urban interventions while implementing digital applications that foster collective, round-table approaches to design. Essentially centering the environment (Umwelt) as an encompassing and interconnecting catalyst between multiple disciplines, philosophies, and modes of inquiry and technologies, the framework reciprocally fosters individual and critical ident
Simulating and assessing prospective scenariosA comparative approach in urban planning
The first part of the paper is centred on the phenomena of urban growth, in order to set the rules for a sustainable scenario of urban development. Then we enter the core of the paper that is the comparison of models. For each of the three compared models, we describe its main theoretical characteristics, the chosen parameters, and the obtained results. In section 6, heterogeneity of the produced results is discussed, and we highlight the points of interest and the lacks of the three models. Her
Geometric Modeling of Solid Objects by Using a Face Adjacency Graph Representation
A relational graph structure based on a boundary representation of solid objects is described. In this structure, called Face Adjacency Graph, nodes represent object faces, whereas edges and vertices are encoded into arcs and hyperarcs. Based on the face adjacency graph, the authors define a set of primitive face-oriented Euler operators, and a set of macro operators for face manipulation, which allow a compact definition and an efficient updating of solid objects. The authors briefly describe a
Artificial Worlds, Virtual Generations
The progress in the scientific understanding/simulation of the evolution mechanisms and the first technological realizations (artificial life environments, robots, intelligent toys, self reproducing machines, agents on the web) are creating the base of a new age: the coming of the artificial beings and artificial societies. Although this aspect could seems a technological conquest, by our point of view it represent the foundation of a new step in the human evolution. The anticipation of this cha
Pinhaldigital, estrutura mnem?nica e processos multim?dia nas fazendas de caf?: Hist?ria, arquitetur
This article has two aims, first to discuss the use of mnemonic structures in multimedia processes with complex contents in the example of the research project and activity PinhalDigital. Moreover it intends to describe the transdisciplinar method used for the production of the application, developing didactic extracurricular and interdisciplinary activities in the areas of history, architecture and technology through the use of multimedia construction processes. PinhalDigital was born of an ini
FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENT ON KITCHEN FUNCTION IN HANOI
This study is a part of a licentiate thesis on "Functional kitchen for the Vietnamese cooking way"at the Department of Architecture and Development studies, Lund University. The issues it is dealing with are: (1) Inadequacy of kitchen design in the apartment buildings in Hanoi, where the kitchen is often designed as a mere cooking place - other parts of the food making process are not given any attention. (2) Lack of standard dimensional and planning criteria for functional kitchen which can ser
SEM image of Velcro (TM)
Velcro is a system of hard polymer hooks and soft nylon loops, both woven into backing fabric. Inspired by the natural seed propagation mechanism used by some plants in the form of 'burrs', Velcro was invented in Switzerland in 1948 by George de Mestral. [...]
Cybrid Principles: Guidelines for Merging Physical and Cyber Spaces
This article introduces seven principles for the design of mixed reality compositions. Contrasting the novelty of mixed reality technology, we have derived these principles from basic needs served by traditional architecture as well as those that have arisen since the introduction of information technologies. These principles draw also from research in cognitive science, human-computer interface design and the recognition of the multivalent, psychosomatic nature of space.
STARS: Shared Transatlantic Augmented Reality System
Since October 2000 the authors have operated a laboratory, the Shared Transatlantic Augmented Reality System (STARS), for exploring telepresence in the domestic environment. The authors, an artist and an architect, are conducting a series of experiments to test their hypotheses concerning mixed reality and supportive environments. This paper describes these hypotheses, the purpose and construction of the lab, and preliminary results from the ongoing collaboration.
Envisioning Cyberspace: Designing 3D Electronic Spaces
Free of the constraints of physical form and limited only by imagination, new environments spring to life daily in a fantastic realm called cyberspace. The creators of this new virtual world may be programmers, designers, architects, even children. In this invigorating exploration of the juncture between cyberspace and the physical world, architect Peter Anders brings together leading-edge cyberspace art and architecture ... inspiring new techniques and technologies ... unexpected unions of real
Digital Historic Heritage: documenting of Pelourinho, Salvador - Bahia, Brazil, with 3D laser scanni
This paper describes the Pelourinho Project realized past July in Salvador, during the 1st International Conference on 3D Laser Scanning for Heritage Documentation. The Pelourinho located at the historic center of Salvador, is an impressive wide set of buildings listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The text contains a quickly overview about the 3D laser scanning technology, shows how data are captured and what they stored and what they means. The 3D laser scanning model, another kind of 3D geomet

Design Tool Integration: Model Flexibility for the Building Profession
The development of ICAtect, as discussed in the Building Systems Automation and Integration Symposium of 1991, provides a way of integrating simulation tools through a common building model. However, ICAtect is only a small step towards the ultimate goal of total integration and automation of the building design process. In this paper we investigate the next steps on the path toward integration. We examine how models structured to capture the physical attributes of the building, as required by s
Representation in a time of re-presentation: design media processes in architectural education
This paper examines what is appropriate and valuable to include in architectural education in light of changing representational conventions and techniques. Architecture finds itself at a unique moment in time where the means of production for the profession, and indeed the entire discipline, are transforming and fundamentally undermine the existing models of education, production and understanding. The threat to architecture education is that architecture becomes learned techniques rather than
Body|Form|Space: Geometric translations of the body in motion
This paper presents a novel approach to digital investigation of body, space, form and motion to expose issues of spatial perception. The spatial experience as generated from, and translated by, the human body is the focus of this work. The work explores the representational value of the body?s sense-image, the context and spatial/visual literacy of the learned sense of space-time generated from the study of the human body. Here the body is conceived not just in space but also in time, affording
T?cnicas Cinematogr?ficas para las Animaciones Arquitect?nicas (Film-making techniques for Architect
The paper presents film techniques for the expressive development of architectural animations, based on a graphic analysis of productions related to architecture (famous movies, documentaries of buildings and contemporary animations). This study is revealing some cinematographic concepts such as the dynamic composition of image, diversity of camera's positions, control of movements and rhythmic montage of shots that support a meaningful presentation of buildings. Also it suggests the geometric p
Modelaci?n de Actividades [Modeling of Activities]
Despite increasing interest in the functionality and humanization of architecture, scarcely the occupation of buildings are studied and it lacks methods to represent activities in the spaces. By this reason, it proposes a system such integrates simulation of processes and virtual modeling software, to program the behavior of tri-dimensional characters based on the probabilistic evolution of events, testing this approach in the study of emergency services of hospitals. It describes the procedure
Dynamic Generation of Design Plans at the Brief Stage
The traditional approach to design and construction suffers from many limitations. As the technology becomes more available to the average users, the need for an effective and efficient solution has never been greater. This paper introduces an alternative approach to the life cycle of construction projects "application controlled process". Based on this approach, a framework for an Integrated Construction Environment (ICE) has been developed and implemented in a prototype demonstrator "SPACE" (S
A New Methodology to Develop Hypermedia Systems for Architecture History
This paper illustrates a research project concerning the analysis of architectural works through a comparative study based on hypermedia tools; by exploring the hypermedia, users can find the main subjects relative to the "method " of architectural planning. The use of multimedia in architecture allows the integration in a single system of different types of information which are necessary for the description of a work. texts, designs, photos and sounds. In addition, the hypertext information st
