The Acoustics of Speech and Hearing is an H-Level graduate course that reviews the physical processes involved in the production, propagation and reception of human speech. Particular attention is paid to how the acoustics and mechanics of the speech and auditory system define what sounds we are capable of producing and what sounds we can sense. Sun exposure is public enemy number one when it comes to damaging byproducts of summer fun.
But too much exposure to the sounds of summer can also cause long-term damage.
Otolaryngologists at Duke University Medical Center say listening to any sound above 80 decibels for too long can damage hearing. 80 db is the approximate level of the dial tone coming out of an old land-line phone. Sounds higher than that can cause cumulative hearing damage that might not show up for years, even decades.
