In this informal talk and audio presentation, Professor Helen Vendler reflects on what did and did not draw her to Wallace Stevens when she first encountered his work in her twenties. She asks why Stevens, in his seventies, was drawn to a plainness of style not present in his first book, Harmonium (1923). This lecture is segmented 17 minute video also has a transcript to help students follow the sophisticated presentation. The narrator compares primary source material written by Frederick Law Olmsted and published in a collection called The Cotton Kingdom to the letters written by a kidnapped African-American author named Solomon Northup. It would greatly help to have excerpts from these two works to help students understand the lecture better. There are other works as well and good data.

The College of Charleston combined the tools of economics with the world of soccer in an alternative spring break experience.
