Cu 21, Sn 79 (wt%), peritectic transformation
This microstructure is generated via a peritectic′s reaction (L+ε = η), which bears some similarities to the more familiar eutectic reaction (L = α+β). Upon cooling from the liquid phase field, primary ε is formed, which can be seen here as a slightly darker phase than the sheath of η surrounding it. The η sheath is the product of a peritectic reaction between ε and liquid. The peritectic reaction rarely goes to completion, si
Fe, C 0.3 (wt%) steel, spheroidised carbide
A hypoeutectoid alloy (composition less than eutectoid). The first phase formed upon cooling from the austenite phase field is proeutectoid ferrite. Due to the lower solubility of carbon in ferrite, carbon is partitioned into the remaining austenite. At the eutectic point the remaining carbon-enriched austenite transforms to pearlite (a mixture of ferrite and cementite), which is the darker region of the micrograph. The proportion of pearlite is dependent upon the overall composition.Subsequent
As-cast wrought-grade aluminium alloy
The micrograph shows Al-Mg-Fe-Si containing < 1wt.% of each solute. No addition of grain refinement particles (e.g. TiB2). This micrograph illustrates one of the possible growth morphologies that a solidifying metal can adopt (c.f. micrograph 712). The dendritic structure is the result of instabilities in the solid-liquid interface during growth due to the rejection of solute into the liquid phase. Dendritic grains are more prevalent in alloys of high solute content and larger grain sizes. The Ba
Optical Tweezers and Applications
Did you ever imagine that you can use light to move a microscopic plastic bead? Explore the forces on the bead or slow time to see the interaction with the laser's electric field. Use the optical tweezers to manipulate a single strand of DNA and explore the physics of tiny molecular motors. Can you get the DNA completely straight or stop the molecular motor?
Steven Ujifusa on William Francis Gibbs and His Ships
Named one of The Wall Street Journal's top 10 nonfiction books of 2012, Steven Ujifusa's A Man and His Ship: America's Greatest Naval Architect and His Quest to Build the SS United States brings William Francis Gibbs' story to life. Wharton legal studies and business ethics professor G. Richard Shell recently sat down with Ujifusa to learn more about what inspired the author to tell Gibbs' story, what led Gibbs to build ships and how the builder's firm became
Conveyancing Project (Sale Files)
This simulation takes students through a conveyancing transaction both for the sale and purchase of a domestic property in Scotland. The simulation covers all the basic procedural steps required in order to successfully complete the transaction on behalf of a married couple. The students work in their virtual firms to complete the transaction over a 10 week period. However, the simulation could be carried out on an individual basis. Both sides of the transaction are completed simultaneously. Th
Internet Technology and Lifelong Learning
This is a text version of an online distance-learning course produced in 2004. It is deposited here now (July 2009) for archive purposes. It was originally intended for the professional development of staff involved in any way with the management, design and delivery of lifelong learning. It may be of interest to producers of new courses in this field, or to future historians of technology, or simply to educators who may like to be reminded of how different things were in 2004. Internationalising the Curriculum: an annotated bibliography
This annotated bibliography comprises a selection of books, journal articles, conference papers and other resources on the subject of the internationalised curriculum. It has been compiled initially from a library of global sources originally brought together as part of the review of literature in the field, commissioned by the Higher Education Academy in 2006 (Caruana, V. and Spurling, N., 2007). This has been up-dated to include more recent work. The central criterion for selection of material
Internationalisation good practice: The inclusive curriculum and ‘Internationalisation at Home’
This theme includes papers and articles which explore the meanings attributed to key phrases and attempt to define key concepts within the field of internationalisation as it relates specifically to learning, teaching and assessment practice and curriculum design and delivery in higher education. Many contributions provide concrete examples of activities to support multicultural learning and embed international dimensions in curricula. The student voice is apparent in research that engages stude

Climate Justice vis-à-vis Global Justice [Audio]
Speaker(s): Dr Katie Steele | Who should accept responsibility for, and bear the costs of, climate change? Can climate change be sectioned off as an isolated issue of justice, or is it inextricably entangled with broader concerns of global justice? Katie Steele is senior lecturer in philosophy at LSE.
