How Do Avalanches Form?
There are two basic elements to an avalanche: a steep, snow-covered slope and a trigger that causes a weak layer within the snow pack to collapse. This video segment adapted from NOVA reveals that the shape of the ice crystals of snowflakes within a snow pack is also a critical factor. This ten minute video is about Brown vs. Board of Education and Thurgood Marshall. It is mainly talking heads and so is best used for older students who have some idea about the judical system. It covers a lot of history related to civil rights.
Significance of Brown v. Board of Education
The landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" was a watershed moment in the civil rights movement, paving the way for integration and the civil rights movement. This three minute video has some excellent orginial footage. Some footage may be "rough" for students to see.

By 1952, the citizens who had initiated the Clarendon and Farmville cases entrusted their fate to the NAACP lawyers along with citizens involved with three other cases. The Supreme Court combined them all into one case, Brown v. Board of Education. This is a good, five minute video, about the case and how lawyers Davis and Marshall "fought" it out for a verdict on racial segregation and Brown vs. Board of Education.
