Narratives of Slavery
This lecture is segmented 17 minute video also has a transcript to help students follow the sophisticated presentation. The narrator compares primary source material written by Frederick Law Olmsted and published in a collection called The Cotton Kingdom to the letters written by a kidnapped African-American author named Solomon Northup. It would greatly help to have excerpts from these two works to help students understand the lecture better. There are other works as well and good data.

The son of Japanese immigrants, Army Medic Jimmie Kanaya joined the U.S. Army in 1941. Although his family was relocated to an internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor and he himself was treated as an enemy for some time, he eventually volunteered for America's first all-Japanese Regiment. In this video clip, hear more about his story of fighting for the Americans instead of against them. (2:39)

This short video gives excellent real life footage of Steller's Sea Lion colony. Students will enjoy the sights and sounds of these amazing animals as they interact in their natural environment. Steller's sea lion is the largest of the eared seals (members of the family Otariidae), a group that includes fur seals and sea lions.
