Cell Signalling
A chapter which describes the mechanisms of signal transduction in a eukaryotic cell, including the activation of G-proteins and kinase cascades (49 figures). The unit is intended as ~10hrs study at level 2/3. It also provides background reading for the experimental investigation 'Investigating intracellular signalling pathways' (http://open.jorum.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1581).
Proteins
A chapter describing protein structure and function, including 53 figures and 7 large tables. It is intended as ~9hrs study time at level 2/3. It also provides background reading for the experimental investigation on SDS-PAGE and Western-blotting (http://open.jorum.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1579).
Multimodal representations of architectural design knowledge: Interaction between visual and ontolog
This paper presents multimodal representation of architectural design knowledge, where explicit and implicit information are linked. The aim is to develop computational environment that combines several modes of representation. Integration of interactive digital-models library and ontological model of architectural design factors is investigated.
Ethics of Virtuality? Virtuality of Ethics
This paper addresses issues pertaining to architecture, virtuality and ethics by establishing an interactive, non-linear virtual environment as a tool for investigation into the virtuality of ethics and ethics of virtuality, in the context of architecture. Starting from the assertion that ?Virtual Environment (VE) is a metaphor of Real Environment (RE)?, we test the proposition that suggests ?Ethics of RE can be tested and simulated in VE?. Challenging the notion that sees people reacting to VE
Cercariae of Digenetic Trematodes: Use In Laboratory Investigations
In the complex life cycle of a digenetic trematode, the cercaria larva is shed from a snail intermediate host and represents a short-lived, aquatic transfer stage to the next host. Due to its temporary free-living existence, the cercarial stage is ideal for a number of investigative projects. Two general experiments will be conducted with the unusually large cercaria of Proterometra macrostoma. Students assess the effect of: (1) different light wavelengths on the vertical swimming burst distance

Challenging reality
A behind the scenes interview with Professor Christopher Barnatt, Director and Producer of a new TV documentary on what we perceive to be real, and what, if any, future lies ahead for us.
The TV documentary was televised in April 2009 and was based on a book written by Professor Christopher Barnatt in 1997, also entitled Challenging Reality, which focused on momentus change across history. The new television series developed this theme further, with input from numerous other experts at the Uni

Implement Minimal Environmental Impact Practices
This Unit covers the basic knowledge and skills to ensure that practices are implemented to achieve minimal environmental impact whilst participating in outdoor activities under supervision. At the end of your study of this unit, you should be able to determine the environmental impacts of outdoor recreation activities. You should be able to adopt practices to reduce impact on the natural environment and on other users of wilderness areas
