Biography
Coby Clarke received his Ph.D. in the field of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) from the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. He then joined Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering as a Research Assistant working on carbon fiber composite recycling with Prof. Steven Pickering. In 2016, he moved to the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London where he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the group of Prof. Jason Hallett. His research topics covered protein stabilization, biomass pretreatment, sustainable chemical processes, and soft materials. In 2020, he returned to Nottingham where he joined Prof. Peter Licence in The Centre for Sustainable Chemistry at The GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratories to develop next generation solvents for industrial processes. He is now Senior Research Fellow in the School of Chemistry, where his research is focused on soft materials, ion transport, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), and sustainable chemical processes.
Teaching Summary
I tutor first year students on fundamental inorganic chemistry and teach third year students in our inorganic chemistry labs during their research projects.

Current Research
My current research is focused on understanding ion transport in gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) and engineering transport pathways at the liquid-polymer interface so that we can bypass viscosity restricted diffusion and create faster charging, more robust high capacity energy storage systems. I am also developing a range of sustainable chemical processes using next generation solvents that are safer to use than existing molecular solvents.
