Biography
Mal has worked in a wide range of since qualifying as a teacher in the early 1990s - across the East Midlands.
Whilst a Head of Geography he was an active supporter of the local Geography network in Nottinghamshire - supporting good practice and sharing geographical expertise with peers. He has been privileged to serve as an Advanced Skills Teacher in Nottinghamshire - coaching colleagues and inspiring them to become outstanding classroom practioners and leaders of learning. After this role he moved on to be a Deputy Head with a focus on Teaching and Learning, initially in a large secondary, and subsequently across a Federation of three schools as a Head of School with a pedagogical based remit. Throughout this time he actively supported the ITE geography programme here at the University.
As a Head teacher he has worked in challenging schools embedding coaching cultures and focusing on systematic, strategic and supportive developmental approaches for teachers at all levels of their careers.
As a Geography specialist Mal is passionate about nurturing future Geographers who are critically aware, reflective practioners who are prepared to take risks to secure fantastic learning for their students.
Mal has worked on the Geography course since 2017, and alongside his course leader work he has recently been involved in senior leadership development and undertaking quality assurance work in a range of schools. He has a deep knowledge of other ITE routes having supported initial teacher training in a variety of contexts.
He has an interest in mentoring and coaching methodologies and exploring different methods of embedding and sustaining high quality practice.
Mal is an active member of the Geographical Association
