Associate Professor in Education, Faculty of Social Sciences
Manny Madriaga joined the University of Nottingham in 2022. He has a background working in disability student support, widening participation, education development, and quality enhancement. He was born and raised in California, ancestral lands of the Ohlone and Esselen.
His research interests are on the processes of social exclusion/inclusion related to 'race', ethnicity and disability. He is a sociologist of education currently engaged in research projects with a focus on widening participation and culturally relevant teaching in higher education.
Manny is currently teaching on BA Education and MA Special and Inclusive Education. He is also supervising MA dissertations and doctoral students in the School of Education.
Manny is currently researching matters of race, disability, and equality in accessing higher education.
From 2021-2025, Manny is currently conducting research and evaluation work, alongside Sheffield Hallam University, on increasing access and participation for Black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups in postgraduate research study. This is a part of the evaluation strand for the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education www.ycede.ac.uk
In 2021-2022, Manny was PI for a Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) Scoping Award to examine race and widening access policy in English higher education. Two outputs are listed below:
In 2017-2019, Manny was a Senior Research Fellow on research team led jointly by Dr Lindsey Bowes, Research Director, CFE Research and Professor Colin McCaig, Sheffield Hallam University. In 2023-2024, Manny will be undertaking a Leverhulme Research Fellowship on hope for anti-racist change in higher education. Details of this project was featured in the May 2023 Leverhulme Trust newsletter (p.15).
