Biography
Nuala is an Associate Professor and Director of Professional Education Courses in the School of Education.
Nuala initially trained as a PE teacher in Northern Ireland and then completed an MSc in PE and Sport Science at Loughborough University. She went on to lecture in Exercise Physiology for 15 years at Manchester Metropolitan University. She held Departmental leadership roles in staff development, key skills and personal tutoring and was appointed a Faculty Senior Learning and Teaching Fellow. During this time she also worked as an Exercise Physiology consultant to the England netball team and supported the bronze medal winning team at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
Nuala completed an MA in Education at Oxford Brookes University in 2002 and joined the University of Nottingham in 2005 to work on the PGCHE. She was PGCHE Course Director from 2006 to 2023 with overall responsibility for the course at the University's UK, China and Malaysia campuses.
Nuala has acted as external examiner for PGCHE type courses at St. Mary's University College, Queen's University Belfast, University of Essex, University of Southampton and currently Heriot Watt University.
Nuala was awarded a Lord Dearing Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 2022 and achieved Principal Fellow of HEA status in 2023.

Teaching Summary
Nuala teaches on the Postgraduate Certificate in HE and PGCert HE Global courses, both of which are aimed at those teaching and supporting learning in HE.
Research Summary
Nuala is interested in the development of all academic staff as teachers. She is currently investigating the support for international teachers who are new to teaching in UK HE.
