Expertise Summary

Edward Goodwin read Jurisprudence at Mansfield College, Oxford, graduating in 1994. He then trained, and qualified as a property litigation solicitor, with the international law firm, Clifford Chance (London and Hong Kong). After this period in practice, he began studying for an LL.M in Environmental Law at the University of Nottingham, graduating with distinction in 2001. Following a brief period working as an intern with the United Nations Environment Programme, Nairobi, he returned to the University of Nottingham in order to complete a PhD in the field of International Environmental Law. Prior to rejoining the University of Nottingham in 2010, he worked as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Leicester. He was a Grotius Research Scholar at the University of Michigan, School of Law in 2015.

Edward Goodwin's expertise lies in Environmental, Land and Heritage Law driven by a long held interest in ecology as well as natural and social history. His primary research focus is upon public international law and the conservation of wildlife and habitats. He is the co-editor of Edward Elgar's Handbook on Biodiversity and Law and is currently in the process of producing a second volume for Edward Elgar. He is an expert on multiple issues including compliance and governance, and also the legal protection of marine habitats and threatened marine species. His monograph entitled International Environmental Law and the Conservation of Coral Reefs is the first major publication on international law and these critically endangered habitats. He has also contributed chapters on threatened marine species and vulnerable marine ecosystems, biodiversity and plastics, and on the Ramsar Convention to leading research handbooks. His recent research into the way delegates and delegations are prepared for, and participate in, meetings of the parties to environmental treaties was published in the Journal of Environmental Law. This research is of great interest to those who seek to increase the tendency for States to comply with the decisions and resolutions issued by environmental regimes. Finally, he is well known for his research on international law and world heritage, as evidenced by his involvement with research into preserving Egypt's cultural heritage.

Edward Goodwin welcomes approaches from prospective PhD students in the areas of International Environmental Law, Heritage Law and Land Law.
