Biography

Laurence is a BPS chartered psychologist with an interdisciplinary skill set spanning sport, exercise and health psychology, perceptual-cognitive expertise, and motor control. Laurence joined the University of Nottingham (UoN) having previously worked at Loughborough University. He is a member of the Division of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, within the School of Life Sciences.

Research Summary

Laurence is interested in future health and behaviour research with a potential focus on exercise and lifestyle interventions as well as stress reactivity and management.

Laurence's broad research spans the fields of perceptual-cognitive expertise and exercise psychology. In perceptual cognitive psychology he focuses on lifespan cognitive function, as well as how individuals perceive and interact with their environment. This includes sport performance research examining how athletes anticipate the actions of an opponent. His research in health and exercise psychology focused on the role of exercise for health and well-being. Research areas include, exercise for health in non-clinical and clinical populations, behaviour change, perception and action, anticipation and deception, cognitive function, and lifestyle physical activity.

Recent Publications

Laurence teaches on the Sport and Exercise Science BSc and supervises undergraduate final year project and dissertations. His teaching spans Sport Psychology, Exercise and Health Psychology and Research Methods. This includes the role of a Sport Psychologist working with athletes in high performance environments, exercise and physical activity interventions for clinical and non-clinical populations, and quantitative research methods.
