Research Summary

My area of research is bone biology and bone biomaterials:

I am currently working on the mechanisms controlling bone growth and their involvement in the pathogenesis of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), with a specific interest in leptin and the endocannabinoid system.

I also work on establishing the role of silicon and silicates in bone growth and their incorporation into novel biomaterials.

  • I am responsible for histology and pathology teaching on the Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) course and contribute to teaching and assessment in all 9 modules.
  • I convene 2 of the 9 modules on the Basic Clinical Sciences element of GEM: A12F1G: Structure, function and defense and A12A1G: Alimentary System
  • I contribute to teaching and assessment of normal structure and function and pathology in 9 modules on the BSc in Medical Physiology and Theraputics (B121) . I convene two modules on the BSc: A11MVT: Movement and A12HIS: Diagnostic Histopathology and Imaging
  • I have obtained funding from the Teaching and Learning Development Fund to implement histology and pathology teaching via a virtual microscope. This is used widely in GEM&H and I am currently working with colleagues in the Schools of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to implement this resource faculty-wide.
  • I facilitate problem-based learning (PBL) sessions on the GEM course and am responsible for the line management and scheduling of PBL on the GEM course.
  • I am the current QA lead for the GEM course (2011-)
  • I am tutor to students on both the BSc and GEM courses
  • I supervise BSc and B Med Sci student projects each year
  • I contribute to teaching on the A13DIT module on the Undergraduate medical course
  • I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have completed the PGCHE at the University of Nottingham
  • I am a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society and the current Honorary Secretary for Education and Outreach (2009-2018). This has involved developing a portfolio-based Diploma course for microscopists and an Outreach programme for primary schools as well as being an active member of Council and the Executive Committee.
  • For information on the professional qualification (DipRMS) or the primary school outreach programme visit www.rms.org.uk/outreach Primary schools can register to borrow a Microscope Activity Kit, free of charge for a term. The kit contains everything you need to run microscopy sessions including microscopes, USB camera, all samples, children's worksheets, samples and a teachers pack and instructions.
  • I work with a not-for-profit organisation: Ignite! to promote independent learning and creativity in science education via Lab_13 - a lab managed by young people for young people where they can experiment, play, invent, design, solve problems, explore, work alongside a scientist/designer/engineer in residence… and so much more. This has become a reality for six schools in the East Midlands (both primary and secondary).
