Kate Wilson

Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences



Professor Kate Wilson is a qualified social worker and academic, with a national and international reputation in the field of child welfare, adoption and foster care and therapeutic work with children and adolescents.

She is now Emeritus Professor of Social Work at The University of Nottingham, having held the Chair of Social Work and directed the Centre for Social Work at the university until her retirement in 2008. Her recent and current appointments include that of non-executive director of the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust ( one of the largest Trusts with responsibility for mental health services in the UK), Chair of the Research Advisory Group for the British Association of Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), and Chair of the national Centre for Social Work Practice.

Her publications include twelve jointly authored or edited books which reflect her professional practice and research interests; a second edition is currently being prepared of the latest of these, Social Work: an Introduction to Contemporary Practice, which was jointly authored and published in April 2008 by Pearson Education. She has lectured in America, Italy, France, Germany and the UK on her research interests, most recently on the implications for the social work profession and for society of the highly publicised events surrounding the tragic death of Baby P.

She has undertaken a range of voluntary activities relevant to her professional work and as a contribution to the community. She was a founder member of and conciliator for the Hull Family Mediation Service, a tutor for Relate in Hull, sat on the board of management for the York Mediation Service and Barnados' West Yorkshire Adoption Panel, and acted as a tutor to Relate in Hull, as a freelance counsellor and as an expert witness in child care proceedings.
