A career in government social research

Have you ever wondered what social researchers do in government? Wondered what a career as a government social researcher has to offer?

We invited Majid Bastan-Hagh, Senior Researcher from HMRC to talk to you about her role. The session will:

  • increase your knowledge and awareness of the Civil Service and social research
  • showcase pathways into government social research
  • break down expectations of what a career in the Civil Service might involve, who it might appeal to, or be suitable for
  • provide information on the skills required to be a successful social researcher
  • provide you with the information to consider government social research as a valuable career pathway

From Academia to the Civil Service

Hear from Dr Maddy Hallewell, Social Researcher at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. Maddy previously worked at the Human Factors Research Group, University of Nottingham as Research Fellow in Human Factors. 

Find out about Maddy’s journey from academia to the Civil Service and where the similarities and differences are within the roles and sectors. 

Maddy will also talk about the application process and share career tips on how to get into the sector.

Costello Medical: A Career in Medical Writing and Scientific Support for Healthcare for PGRs

Hear from Dr Andrew Wilhelmsen, an alumnus from the University of Nottingham, who works for Costello Medical.

Costello Medical provides scientific support in the analysis, interpretation, and communication of clinical and economic health data.

Andrew elaborates on his journey before Costello Medical, his current role as a senior analyst in the Pro Bono and Publications divisions, and the types of roles available within the sector.

Introduction to Knowledge Exchange

In this webinar, Dr Luke Norman talks about his role as a Knowledge Exchange (KE) Fellow and what that means. 

Knowledge Exchange is the practice of a two-way communication between a university and an external party to achieve benefits for all. 

In his role, Luke wears many hats including commercial project manager, public engagement and outreach Lead, and content creator. He illustrates how these roles interconnect within the framework of Knowledge Exchange.
