Biography
Prof. Christopher Hayes began his academic career here in Nottingham with his B.Sc. in July 1992.
He then completed his Ph.D. studies under the supervision of Professor Gerald Pattenden FRS at the University of Nottingham (1992-1995) working on the development of acyl radical chemistry and its application to the total synthesis of phomactin A.
In January 1996, he moved to the University of California at Berkeley (USA) as a NATO Postdoctoral Fellow where he worked in the group of Professor Clayton H. Heathcock on the successful synthesis of the potent anticancer molecules spongistatin 1 and 2.
In September 1997, he returned to Nottingham as a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry, and was subsequently promoted to Reader (2003), Associate Professor (2006) and Professor of Organic Chemistry (2011).

Current Research
Research is centred in main-stream synthetic organic chemistry, focusing on the organic chemistry of biologically active molecules. His current research interests span a number of areas such as (i) The total synthesis of biologically active natural products. Targets of current interest are lactacystin (20S proteasome inhibitor), myriocin (immunomodulator) and altemicidin (anti-tumor); (ii) The total synthesis of sequence specific DNA and RNA binding molecules for use as "antigene" and "antisense" therapeutic agents; (iii) The development of new methodology for use in synthesis.
