Biography

Miriam O'Duill received her D.Phil. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Oxford in 2016, where she carried out research on late-stage fluorination with Prof. VĂ©ronique Gouverneur. She spent two years as a DAAD postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, investigating selective catalytic functionalisation of alkenes and alkynes with Prof. Keary M. Engle. In 2018, Miriam began her independent career at NUI Galway, before accepting a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham in 2020. Her research interests include transition-metal catalysis and late-stage functionalisation.

Current Research

In the O'Duill group, we are interested in addressing current challenges in synthetic and medicinal chemistry by developing novel reagents and methodology for the selective, late-stage construction and destruction of difficult C-X bonds. Projects include rational design of removable directing groups for C-H activation, Pd-catalysed synthesis of deuterated heterocycles, the development of late-stage electrophilic alkylating agents, and ion responsive drug delivery. In addition, we are collaborating with other research groups on the synthesis of light-switchable NMDA modulators, lanthanide imaging probes and fluorinated biomolecules.
