Biography

I joined the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham in April 2022.

Before that, I was an Associate Professor in Data Analytics at the Middlesex University in London for over 10 years.

Before joining Middlesex, I spent more than 10 years in Australia, completing my PhD in 2004 at the University of Queensland, followed by Postdoc at the University of Sydney/NICTA. After the postdoc, I was a senior research scientist at the CSIRO (Australia's national research organisation) and later a bioinformatics specialists at the Australia National University (ANU).

Expertise Summary

My expertise is Data Science, with over 20 years' experience in various aspects.

My current work focuses on Human-Centred Machine Learning, which includes Explainable AI / Machine Learning Ethics, and Human-AI teaming, i.e., enable user and algorithms collaboration for challenging analysis tasks.

Before this, I spent about 10 years on Visual Analytics, which uses interactive visualisation to support analytical reasoning (also known as 'Sensemaking').

I also have a long-term interest in Provenance, which tracks the changing history of an artifact and the context within which this happens. This is critical to Reproducible Science and can also be applied auditing (e.g., compliance), collaboration (so not just the results but also the processes that led to them can be shared), and even the Human-AI Teaming mentioned earlier.

I also have several year's experience working on DNA sequencing data, building eScience workflow systems, developing Graph Drawing methods, and improving query optimisation for spatial databases.
