Professor Graham Kendall discusses the difficulty of compiling football fixture lists for Christmas and New Year in the latest copy of Times Higher Education. Professor Kendall has devised software that automatically takes into account detailed criteria laid down by the football authorities which can co-ordinate 92 teams and 46 fixtures to guarantee that teams do not play each other twice over the holiday period, ensure that supporters do not have to travel too far and reduce the pressure on policing and the transport network. Professor Kendall is discussing his results with the Football League.
