The 4th World Congress of Scottish Literatures Public Lecture

We are delighted to announce that the Public Lecture at the 4th World Congress of Scottish Literatures will be delivered by Anne Donovan, author of Scottish literary fiction. Anne will talk about her novels, explaining what she aims to do with her language within each novel. It is sure to be a fascinating talk from an influencial author of fiction set in Scotland. Q&A are welcome.

Anne's Biography

Anne Donovan is the author of the short story collection, Hieroglyphics and other Stories (2001), and the novels, Buddha Da (2003), Being Emily (2008) and Gone Are The Leaves (2014), all published by Canongate. She translated Roald Dahl’s Matilda into Scots (2019 published by Black and White/Itchycoo). She has also written for the stage and radio.

All That Glisters won the Macallan/Scotland on Sunday short story competition and her stories have appeared in many anthologies, including Glasgow Women's Library's 21 Revolutions.  Buddha Da was shortlisted for the Orange Prize, the Whitbread First Novel Award and the Scottish Arts Council Book of the year. It received a Scottish Arts Council Award, was nominated for the Dublin International IMPAC Award and won Le Prince Maurice Award in Mauritius in 2004. 

Much of her work is set in Glasgow and narrated in Glasgow voices.  Gone Are The Leaves is set in the mediaeval era, using Scots words from the past.  Gone Are The Leaves, was shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish Literary Book of the Year Award. Some of her short stories are set texts for the SQA National 5 examinations.

Anne’s work has been translated into many languages, including German, Brazilian Portugese and Turkish.

Anne has delivered in-service on Scots in Education for teachers and students and does workshops and readings in secondary schools. She is involved with GCU Caledonian Club’s work in primary schools.

Anne has worked on several educational projects, The Kist: The Kist/A Chiste and Turnstones 1, school texbooks edited by Robbie Robertson. With Liz Niven, Anne co-authored an article on Scots Language in Education Scottish Education: (Edited by TGK Bryce and WM Humes)

She won the Janet Paisley Services to Scots Award in 2022.
