Description

Dr Florentia Fragkopoulou (Acropolis Museum), Ivory seals at Orthia and Aetos: Ritual employment at (inter)regional sanctuaries

Join leading academics for this week's lecture followed by a general discussion.

Summary: Scholarly work on artefacts from the sanctuaries of Artemis Orthia in Sparta and Aetos on Ithaca has so far been devoted to their stylistic characteristics as the sole result of trade relationships within the ‘Western Koine’ spectrum. This paper seeks to proceed beyond this scope with emphasis placed on the little couchant animal ivory seals found at both shrines. By exploring their purposeful use, it is shown that mythology is an intrinsic feature of ritual enactment at each shrine reflecting different state formation processes.

All are very welcome. Free to attend.
