Ben Sudborough
Ben is a UK student, who studied MSc Economic Development and Policy Analysis.

I chose to study my course because I have a passion for development economics and the policy application of economics in general. This course for me, was the perfect blend of economic theory and applied economics, where all the core modules were modules I would’ve chosen to do. This course taught me a diverse range of economics, all at the cutting edge of the field of research. The lecturers were passionate about the modules they taught, often citing their own publications, and this passion was the one of the most engaging aspects of the course.
My favourite module was Development Policy Analysis. This module covered foreign aid and trade policy, but the largest part of this module was Randomised Controlled Trials. These have been used to analyse many different development policies, such as conditional cash transfers. The lecturers were very engaging, often teaching their own work, and the module was assessed through a group presentation and essay, and individual essay. This gave me the opportunity to work closely with fellow students who in my group were international students from four different countries. Consequently, I learned not just about development economics, but a lot about Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand as well.
During my degree, I suffered a back injury which meant I had severe sciatic pain down my leg almost constantly. I can honestly say the university support services were excellent. I was able to get a support plan and delay both sets of exams while I awaited an operation. This support allowed me to complete my degree to the very best of my ability.
I also engaged the university support and wellbeing services during this time. The support I received from them and the counselling service was excellent and I cannot thank them enough. I consider the support I received as a major factor in the distinction I attained.
