Retaining teachers in schools

Abstract

Teacher retention has been globally a persistent challenge. Failure to recruit and retain qualified teachers has concerning implications for student learning. School leadership plays a central role in retaining teachers. The evidence shows that promoting teachers’ sense of professional autonomy, development, and voice is critical in interactively influencing their well-being and turnover intentions. In this event, Dong Nguyen will share some evidence-informed insights into why and how to maximise teacher feelings of being professionally autonomous, developmental and heard. These insights are drawn from his team’s major review and evaluation of the latest international evidence base on leadership for teacher retention, developed from empirical research over the past 20 years and across more than 60 countries. This project of evidence review was funded by Education Endowment Foundation in England.

Speaker

Dr Dong Nguyen is currently Associate Professor in Educational Leadership at Durham University. He has 15 years of international professional experience across many education systems. Dong has been leading and conducting research projects across countries such as Singapore, the United Kingdom, Rwanda, and Vietnam. His research and publications focus on educational leadership, professional development, and diffusion of innovations. Dong Nguyen is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Educational Management.
