Description

English Subject Interest Group Webinar

As part of our commitment to our Partnership schools, we are inviting secondary mentors and other English colleagues to attend our first virtual Subject Interest Group (SIG) webinar of this academic year. The idea behind the SIG is to provide opportunities for professional dialogue and development amongst our peer group supported by external speakers to provide expert input.

What literature texts are being taught in Years 7-9

Dr Lorna Smith from the University of Bristol, will share findings from a UKLA-funded research project in which she has been recently involved, focusing on the literature texts being taught at KS3 (based on a survey of over 170 schools). Focusing particularly on the 'top ten' novels, plays and poems studied from Years 7 to Years 9, she will discuss implications of reading choices for both teachers and students.

Dr Lorna Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Education and leads the PGCE English programme at the University of Bristol. She is interested in the impact of the current national curriculum for English on creativity in secondary English classrooms and in how curriculum history can inform future practice. She is Chair of NATE’s ITE working group and leads the south west Teachers as Writers group.
