Hugh Burkhardt and Malcolm Swan have been awarded the first Emma Castelnuovo Award from the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI).
Hugh Burkhardt accepted the award on behalf of Malcolm Swan and himself.
The award acknowledges 'more than 35 years of development and implementation of innovative, instructional design concepts, teacher preparation programs, and educational system changes. Hugh Burkhardt and Malcolm Swan have served as strategic and creative leaders of the Nottingham-based Shell Centre team of researcher-designers, which has included many talented international collaborators. Together, Burkhardt and Swan have produced groundbreaking contributions that have had a remarkable influence on the practice of mathematics education'.
About 3500 participants from 105 countries participated in the 13th International Congress on Mathematics Education, which took place from 24-31 July 2016 in Hamburg. Five ICMI awards were presented at the opening ceremony.
