Extending understanding of how to use lesson study to develop mathematics teaching in primary schools in South Africa

In February colleagues from the Observatory for Mathematical Education travelled to Johannesburg in South Africa to build on existing lesson study work in Japan and Ireland.

The aim of this ICRF-funded project was to work collaboratively with South African Education Department officials and colleagues from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) to explore how a lesson study model of professional development could support the development of primary teacher’s subject knowledge and teaching practices. The programme involved two days of professional development with the education department officials, followed by school visits to see lessons in three primary schools in a rural township community and a further visit to a reception lesson in a school on the outskirts of Soweto.

The team had an enriching learning experience and look forward to continuing this work into the future.

Visit the Observatory for Mathematical Education website for more information on their work.
