Geoff is Professor of Mathematics Education and convenor of the Centre for Research in Mathematics Education where he directs and contributes to a substantial portfolio of research. Prior to joining the Centre in 2011 he worked as Senior Research Fellow/Lecturer/Senior lecturer in Mathematics Education for approaching twenty years. This followed a career teaching in school and college for eleven years. Geoff's main area of research has involved applications of mathematics and mathematical modelling at all levels. Notably he has worked on substantial research projects that have explored the use of mathematics in workplaces, mathematics in transition from school/college to STEM courses in university and teaching and learning of modelling/problem solving in the secondary school curriculum. This work has included a number of different projects funded by Leverhulme, Nuffield, ESRC and European Union. Over the last ten years Geoff's work has become increasingly connected internationally making contributions to five European projects and more recently developing partnerships with researchers in Japan and South Africa. Alongside this research Geoff has been involved in the development of curriculum and assessment for post-16 students in the UK, most recently in the introduction of Core Mathematics qualifications. Prior to this Geoff researched mathematics requirements across a range of undergraduate degree programmes and designed national qualifications (Freestanding Mathematics Qualifications and A Level Use of Mathematics) to support progression for post-16 students across a range of courses. Over the past fifteen years Geoff has made a substantial teaching contribution to a range of courses of professional preparation in teaching mathematics as well as for in-service teachers through masters programmes. Currently this teaching intersects with Geoff's research into the development of sustainable and scalable professional learning communities. Geoff publishes widely in international journals in mathematics education and is actively engaged in chairing and co-chairing working groups in mathematical modelling and workplace maths at the international conferences CERME and ICME respectively. He is an executive committee member of the International Community of Teachers of Mathematics and its Applications (ICTMA).
